Houston A+ Challenge Summer Institute XII
The institute will meet for two full days, July 30 and 3, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. To view a draft agenda, click here.
What (and How) Will We Learn?
The Houston A+ Challenge Summer Institute is designed to model what we know about learning and professional development in the following ways:
- Keynote address
At the beginning of the Institute, Dr. Douglas Reeves will present his recommendations for leadership that deepens and sustains learning.
- Breakout sessions
There will be three rounds of breakout sessions presented by local area practitioners that will provide you with strategies and ideas for improving your practice. All sessions will be interactive — to support active, not passive learning.
- Learning communities
Your team will be placed in an Institute learning community with one or two other workplace teams guided by a skilled facilitator to practice and experience the skills you are learning in the institute. You will also have time to plan together — as a team — how you will use what you have learned to impact your work during the coming year.
- Books and other written materials
Each individual participant will receive a personal copy of one of Dr. Reeves’ books. Each team will receive a small library of books and materials to use during the coming year. The books and
additional readings will be used by the learning communities as a focus for their dialog and learning.
What Will We Take Home?
By the end of this Institute, each participating team should have:
- A signed letter of commitment to on-going participation resulting in certification as a
”Leading for Learning” team
- A completed self-evaluation of its status as a “leading for learning” team
- An action plan for continuing the team’s development and impact during the 2008-09 school year
- A small library of books and materials that will support your work during the year
- Opportunities for follow-up activities available throughout the year
- One or more other teams identified as learning partners who will meet jointly during the year for follow-up
