“Urban education is the focal point for economic change in our cities.”

– From Susan's Academy application

For the past seven years, Susan Perry has served as an assistant principal at Charles R. Drew Academy in Aldine ISD, where she wore many hats: magnet coordinator, staff developer, mentor to administrative interns, discipline supervisor, grant writer and curriculum supervisor.  During this time, she also taught alternative education classes for aspiring new educators at Lone Star College, formerly known as North Harris Community College.  Prior to her work at Drew Academy, Susan was a seventh grade reading teacher at Teague Middle School in Aldine ISD for five years, and an English and reading teacher at Northwest Academy, a private school, for five years.  She began her career in education at Shotwell Middle School in Aldine ISD, where she taught sixth grade English and Reading for one year.  Susan is an advocate for and a previous trainer for the New Jersey Writing Project in Texas.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Houston, a master’s degree in Mid-Management and an administrator’s certificate from Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas.  Her vision as a future principal instructional leader of an urban school is “to develop an active community of learners with the focus on student learning.”
