Houston ISD, Aldine ISD and The Houston A+ Challenge are looking for more than 2,000 volunteers to participate in "Reach Out to Dropouts Day Walk " from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, August 26, 2006.
The "Reach Out to Dropouts Day Walk" began in Houston ISD in 2004 as an outgrowth of the district's "expectation: Graduation" Summit in May of that year.
Aldine ISD will holds its first walk this year.
In Houston ISD, 20 high schools will send teams of community volunteers and HISD employees for the third year to speak with students in their homes who did not return at the start of school August 14. In 2004, the first year of the walk, eight high schools took part.
Participating high schools in Houston ISD this year are Austin, Chavez, Davis, Furr, Jones, Kashmere, Lee, Madison, Milby, Reagan, Sam Houston, Scarborough, Sharpstown, Sterling, Waltrip, Washington, Westbury, Wheatley, Worthing and Yates.
Houston's first lady Andrea White, a member of The Houston A+ Challenge Board of Trustees, and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Abelardo Saavedra will lead the Houston ISD walk.
Houston ISD training for new volunteers will take place at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, August 9 or 6 p.m., Wednesday, August 16. Volunteers who participated previously do not have to attend another training session. Both trainings will be held in the Houston ISD Board of Trustees Auditorum, 4400 West. 18th Street.
In 2005, Houston ISD recovered 1,300 dropouts through the walk and other efforts. More than 200 of the students who returned went on to graduate in May.
Participating high schools in Aldine are Aldine Senior High School, Carver High School, Eisenhower High School, MacArthur Senior High School and Nimitz Senior High School.
