Empowerment College Preparatory High School, one of Houston Independent School District's best-kept secrets, is now accepting student applications for 2007-08 enrollment. The small school enrolls students from anywhere in the Houston ISD attendance zone.
The school follows a very focused mission: supporting students through a personalized environment, challenging them with a college prep curriculum, and inspiring them through a social action program of study. The school, which is located at 5655 Selinsky in southeast Houston, opened its doors in August 2005 and remains mission-focused as it welcomes new students.
Successes at Empowerment for 2007-2008:
- This summer, more than 50 percent of Empowerment’s 11th grade students are part of a Summer Bridge program via the school’s partnership with Houston Community College. The remaining students have been accepted for HCC enrollment. All 11th grade students are expected to take dual credit classes in the fall.
- Every Empowerment student has the opportunity to graduate with a minimum of 18 college credit hours, transferable to most major universities.
- EHS students have served as interns with various community-based organizations such as: Methodist Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, HISD elementary and early childhood schools, City of Houston, Ensemble Theatre, etc.
- EHS students demonstrated one of the highest percentage increases in the number of students receiving commended performance on TAKS.

A collaboration between the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES), Houston A+ Challenge and Houston ISD, Empowerment is part of a nationwide effort to create small, instructionally powerful and sustainable schools. The school opened with a ninth grade class of 81 students and has added a new class each year, growing enrollment to a total of approximately 400 students.
