WELCOMES NEW DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS

January 19 , 2007

A former newspaper, web and radio journalist with a passion for public education is the new Director of Public Affairs for Houston A+ Challenge, the organization announced today.

Melissa Milios replaces Nan Powers Varoga as Houston A+ Challenge’s lead contact for media affairs and community engagement. She comes directly from the Los Angeles Unified School District, where she served as Director of Communications for Board President Marlene Canter.

Prior to that, Melissa covered K-12 and higher education for the Daily Breeze newspaper, where she earned a Copley Ring of Truth Honorable Mention for her education reporting.

“Melissa understands the complex issues surrounding school improvement, and she will help relay the compelling stories that are unfolding in Houston’s public schools,” said Michele Pola, Executive Director of Houston A+ Challenge. “We welcome her to our staff, and we invite the Houston community to use her as a resource.”

Melissa’s Texas credentials include three years as a news content producer for the Austin American-Statesman’s web site, Austin360.com, and a year as content manager of a sister site, SanAntonio360.com. She also has worked as a producer at both National Public Radio affiliates in Los Angeles and as a reporter for the Voice of America in London.

Melissa holds a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and an M.A. in Journalism from the University of Southern California. She was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio.
