A+ Makes Strides with Middle School Students 'In the Middle'

For the past 18 months, Houston A+ Challenge has been investing much of our focus, time, and energy in helping students, teachers and school leaders in six local middle schools move from "good to great."

Christopher Perez, a sixth grader in Aldine ISD, is just one of nearly 1,800 so-called "average" students who is benefiting this year from personalized attention, extra time on task, academic enrichment and social-emotional support. The Challenge Network was designed to give Christopher and other A+ Scholars like him the boost they need to get on track for success in high school and college, career and civic life.

A+ Coaches also work alongside teachers and school leaders to design engaging and effective lessons, analyze student data, and utilize that data to prescribe the best interventions and instructional strategies to raise expectations and performance levels for each and every student.

Upcoming A+ Events

School Principals Need District Support, Peer Mentorship and Personal Vision to Meet Rising Expectations

In order to meet rising expectations for student performance -- while dealing with shrinking budgets and over-extended human resources -- today's school principals need strong support from their districts, mentorship from other school leaders, and a relentless focus on what's best for kids.

These conclusions and more were offered at a Jan. 11 "State of the School Principal" forum by a panel of five high-performing principals.
