Reflections on A+
“Out of all the things that I have done to improve myself as a leader, this has been the most valuable.”
Paul Castro

"The Academy has awesome leaders and visionary, thoughtful individuals. The experience is far better than a 'beginners' course in administration."

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the A+ Middle School Leadership Academy different from other principal training opportunities?
Because Houston A+ Challenge partners with multiple school districts, our participants are exposed to a broad range of systems as they analyze and visit school campuses across the Houston region.
In addition, the hands-on, results-focused training offered by Houston A+ is unparalleled. A+ Coaches help principals both to develop their individual leadership skills and also to prepare and implement targeted plans for improving student success at their schools.
How can I apply?
Houston A+ Challenge does not accept individual applications for the MSLA at this time. District-level partnership with Houston A+ Challenge is required, and principals are invited to enroll through the district superintendent.
For information on how to get your district or school involved in the Houston A+ Challenge Middle School Leadership Academy, contact Sheri Miller-Williams, Director of School Performance.
How were individuals identified, recruited and selected for previous A+ leadership academies?
Selection for the 2008 and 2009 Regional Principal Leadership Academy cohorts was highly competitive and competency-based. Candidates completed essays, phone interviews and in-person interviews. Each candidate's track record of instructional success and leadership was also considered in the screening process.
In 2008, Houston A+ Challenge selected 20 aspiring principals from among more than 240 individuals who applied for the first cohort of the Regional Principal Leadership Academy. More than 250 candidates applied for our second cohort in 2009, and 19 interns were selected from that group.
Since 1999, seated school leaders from across the Houston region were invited to join the New Visions in Leadership Academy. Applicants were required to sign a letter of commitment to the program.
